The meaning of life

The meaning of life is a very controversial topic and one that I would like to address. One cannot merely say what the “meaning of life” is because the answer will vary for each person. However, if you want to learn what the meaning of life is for you, I suggest you continue reading.

Firstly, when we enter this world we have no sense of right or wrong, nor do we understand what is pleasurable or irritating so we learn from our experiences as well as the environment that we are brought up in. If you think back to when you were just a kid in your adolescence, you would only do the things that you enjoyed or found entertaining or maybe even something that you were passionate about. Maybe you loved to build with Lego, and you would always beg your parents to get you the most prominent and most laborious lego to complete. Or perhaps you were a sporty kid still outside playing soccer or football with your friends. Or maybe you were that one kid in every class who hated going out and would spend all day inside playing on their computer. Now that you are aware of what life used to be like when you were a child I want you to compare your current life to your adolescent self.

There is no super complicated answer to why we did what we did as a kid, it’s just that we did what we enjoyed and the result of that was we lived a happy life. Now I want you to compare those morals of the adolescent kid to your current experiences, most of us will see a vast difference from our teenage self compared to our life now. Most of us now would have different interests, different hobbies and different morals. Nevertheless, if your interest and hobbies are the same as when you were 10 years old playing video games on the couch that is completely fine as long as your morals have changed or adjusted since your youngster days.

The key to life is not to do what people want you to do or to do what you think you are obligated to do. As humans, we have the need to continue to act the way as people perceive us, for example, if you were always known as the “dumb” kid growing up you are given a moral obligation by your peers to act in that certain way. Nevertheless just because you have a reputation of being “dumb” does not mean that you have to live your life in that specific way. You are allowed to let go of that moral obligation attached to you and live your life the way you want; read a book, study something that interest you and write that book you always wanted to. The only way you are going to be happy in life is not to live up to the expectations that have been pre-obligated to you. If we relate this back to the idea of why we were happy as a child is because as a kid we didn’t have any obligations to act in a specific way therefore, we did what we enjoyed; we need to apply this set of rules to our current lives if we ever want to break out of our bad habits and lead the life we truly want to.

  1. Interesting stuff, not sure any of us are old enough to try and understand the meaning of life though.. maybe when I’m 90 and full of wisdom I might give it a go aha.

  2. you don’t look old enough to be this wise. But you are. you must have had a good mentor or two growing up.

  3. I’m 65. for me the meaning of life is to give expecting nothing in return. to follow your own instincts, so if everyone is going right but that doesn’t make sense to you, go left. “no pain, no gain” is bullshit. I have gained through love and understanding, forgiving AND being forgiving. I used to say “why me?” Now I say “why not me?”. The first principle of Buddhism is “life is difficult”, so if you are having a hard time, you are on the right path. If you choose the easy path, you learn nothing, you gain nothing.
